The ACT assesses high school students' general education development and their ability to complete college-level work. The multiple choice test covers four skill areas: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each individual test score ranges from 1-36. The total of the four sections, divided by four, results in the composite score. Students interested in highly selective schools may elect to take the optional writing portion which is scored separately on a 2-12 scale. Please refer to the ACT website for a complete updated list of colleges that require or recommend the optional writing component.
